Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya established the first of the four Amnaya Peethams at Sringeri over twelve centuries ago, dedicated to fostering the tradition of Sanatana Dharma. Legend has it that, attracted by the sanctity of sacred Sringeri on the banks of the holy Tunga river, where even natural adversaries like the cobra and frog lived in harmony, He established the Dakshinamnaya Sri Sharada Peetham.
Since its inception, the Peetham has seen an unbroken lineage of Gurus, beginning with Jagadguru Sri Sureshwaracharya who was appointed by Sri Adi Shankaracharya Himself. Over centuries, the Peetham has attracted royal patronage and has become a center of learning and spiritual power. The Acharyas of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham have contributed extensively towards propagating Sanatana Dharma through varied Dharmic initiatives and continue to foster the Advaita philosophy that Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya propagated.
